2010 Lauffer Family Reunion
Westmoreland County Conservation District Office
Sunday, August 15
This was another excellent Reunion with the added special Saturday Dinner. We had 32 for dinner and 102 at the Reunion. There were quite a few new folks and lots of family interaction and sharing. Our Sunshine Clown also had lots of kids to entertain. Special thanks go out to Sunshine! Details with photos will be published as soon as I receive the photos and additional information.
By the way, I just want to mention, without bias, that the Henry line beat the John line with attendance.
This is now 2015 and do not like to say, but we did not recieve photos to publish for this reunion. We are losing history folks, need your help!!!!
Tthe family clan met at Peter Lauffer's Barn. As most of you know, this is a special meeting place for the families of Christian Lauffer Sr., The Pioneer. Peter's barn had to be removed to make way for a development. The barn was carefully dismantled by Amish carpenters and the timbers were moved to the site of the present building. This building was designed and built around the barn timbers to realize conservation of natural materials, and to make use of the aged and well persevered barn timber.
Program at 1:30 +/_
This year Shirley Gosnell / Lauffer from the famous Henry line, gave a talk on one of our family heros, Billy Lane Lauffer. Billy was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism in Vietnam. Sadly he gave his life for this honor but other's are with us today because of his actions. Billy has a school named after him in Arizona. Shirley will provide "the rest of the story".
Local tours
As always, Peggy Anthony was our guide to local family sites of interest.
Informal Dinner
this was the first year for Saturday dinner at Rizzo's in Crabtree, about 15 minutes from the hotel area in Greensburg.
There is an interesting connection with this restaurant and the Keener line. Diane Keener / Hogg's mother sold her property in Crabtree to the present owners of the restaurant. Diane provided the following history:
"My grandfather, Homer L. Keener Sr., bought the property next to and above Rizzo's Restaurant form the Jamison Coal Company around 1930. Homer Keener is the great great great grandson of Christian Lauffer. In 1973 there was a fire that destroyed the house. Sometime in the early 80's Ruth Keener, Homer's daughter, and therefore, Christians great great great great granddaughter, sold the property to Jerry and Chic DeFabo, owners or Rizzo's."
